ManchesterUniversity

Department of Fluid Mechanics                                                              1963 - 1970

Ph.D. (Low Speed, Unsteady Flow in Tubes)                                       1970

On arriving at UWIC, I designed and delivered Notational Analysis courses at levels 2,3 and 4 for the then BA HMS degree and Masters’ programme. At that time there were 3 or 4 dissertations per year in notational analysis, this grew to 12, five years ago, now this has mushroomed to 52 this year. I have supervised as many as 31 directly myself, I managed 8 members of staff to supervise the others; I also supervised  MSc dissertations. As the School changed the degree structures I have amended and improved the appropriate elements of these courses to keep pace with the developments in the field in both theory and software and hardware design. This required redesigning modules as the School redefined its degree structure, meeting the appropriate learning demands of each vocational area.

I have pioneered different forms of assessment over the last 20 years, always changing the demands on the student presentations to sustain their interest and challenge them. These have included using submissions of:- flowcharts, programmes, scientific posters, oral presentations, Powerpoint presentations, experimental essays, database evaluations and the critical appraisal of systematic analysis.

Because of recent rapid growth in developments in theory and practise, and the burgeoning employment structures in notational analysis by NGB’s, Institutes of Sport, professional clubs and athletes, I designed an M.Sc. in Performance Analysis at UWIC, this was the first one in the world and has  attracted a great deal of attention from analysts and academics all over the world. It started in September 2003. I was Course Director until I retired in 2009.

I designed and pioneered the idea of an International Masters in Performance analysis of Sport (IMPAS), bringing together the Universities of Magdeburg, Valencia and UWIC to deliver a joint programme that enabled the students to experience 2 taught modules at each university and then return to their university of registration for their dissertation and work experience. NTU, Nottingham replaced UWIC in 2009.

I have also been working with Prof. Nic James to develop an M.Sc. in Performance Analysis at Middlesex University – this started in September 2011. We are currently working on another IMPAS course – possibly with the Universities of Zagreb and Ljubljana. Discussions are under way for an Intercontinental M.Sc. in Performance Analysis with the Universities of Berkeley, California, UBC, Vancouver, Middlesex, UK and Edith Cowan, Perth, Australia.

12. JOURNALS

Review articles for the Journal of Sports Science. and many other sports journals

Member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Kinesiology, (Zagreb), International Journal of Health and Exercise Science (Alicante), International Journal of Computers in Sport Science (China).

Founded the first journal in performance analysis (2001) – the International e-Journal of Performance Analysis of Sport (eIJPAS) and was the General Editor until September 2006, the editorial panel consists of 12 top sports scientists from all over the world. This is managed by the Centre for Performance Analysis, UWIC.

13. PUBLICATIONS

Seeking peer review publications has not been a high priority of mine. Because of the lack of a recognised and accepted forum for the publication of research in notational analysis, I have focused my energy more on  developing and providing such a forum, through conferences, editing proceedings and more lately driving the International e-journal, thus enabling other researchers in the area an avenue of progress. Fortunately this process has attracted some recognition and acceptance for the subject area as a discipline.

15. SUPERVISION

Have supervised 7 PhD’ s and 3 MPhil’s to completion. I am currently supervising eight MPhil/PhD students. In addition I have acted as external examiner for PhD’s and MPhil’s at the universities of Belfast, Swansea, Manchester, Liverpool JMU, the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, UBC Vancouver and the University of Cape Town (South Africa).

16. SPORTS QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

I feel that my work is influenced in a practical way because of my experiences as an elite coach. This too has enabled me to gain more confidence of all practitioners of coaching and sports science. I am an elite professional squash coach and have worked with international squads from England Squash, Squash Wales and also Great Britain Universities. I have elevated UWIC Academy of Squash (women and men) to unprecedented levels of performance.
